"Sustainability Credits:
February 17, the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park hands out certificates to the first supporting companies

The ceremony was held as part of the annual assembly of the UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve, in Reggio Emilia at the CIRFOOD District
Reggio Emilia, 02/17/2023. Today the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park handed out the first 12 certificates with which it awards Sustainability Credits to companies that have chosen to support the innovative project, recognizing the economic value of ecosystem services generated by forests directly to those who manage and own them (https://creditisostenibilita.it/).
The certificate presentation ceremony took place during the Territorial Assembly of the UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve, in whose territory the forests generating the Sustainability Credits are located.
“A big thank you goes out to these companies,” concludes Fausto Giovanelli President of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park and coordinator of the Biosphere Reserve of the same name, “who were the first to believe in our project, rewarding its social and environmental sustainability with their support: the purchase of Sustainability Credits in fact generates economic resources to support sustainable and responsible management, certified according to FSC and PEFC standards.

All of this information is updated on time and verifiable on the project website in the Transparency section, where there are: the Sustainability Credit Register, the Buyer’s Library, and the Library of Project Participating Forest Owners/Managers.

“We carefully selected the companies to which the Sustainability Credits were sold,” emphasizes Giuseppe Vignali, Director of the National Park, “using strict criteria defined in a Public Notice. Thus, these are companies already engaged in Corporate Social Responsibility or climate footprint reduction pathways, whose actions are already transparent to stakeholders. Among its many objectives, the project aims to reward those companies that are already committed to reducing their impacts on the environment, and that choose to use Sustainability Credits as an improvement action.

The results of the Sustainability Credits project in 2022
The project is still in its infancy yet has already produced significant impacts. 8,300 hectares of certified forests, 13 forest owners and managers involved, more than 4 thousand Sustainability Credits generated, with a total economic value of more than 130,000 thousand euros that will be fully distributed to local communities (forest owners and managers).Today, 1,050 Sustainability Credits generated in 2022 are still available for companies that wish to join the project now, and at the same time reservations are open for Sustainability Credits that will be generated in 2023 (available from 2024), for those companies that do not have contingent demands.
